Re-Engage

After writing two books on employee retention best practices (both of which were named among the top 30 business books of the year) I became known as an “expert” on that topic. Since then, I have greatly expanded my consulting practice and spoken to audiences in Europe, Asia, and South America

But the truth is I consider myself more of a student than an expert. What I study and research are the things that leaders in the best workplaces do to inspire the people working there to give their best effort, to stay, and to say good things about their work experience. This area of research has come to be known as employee engagement.

More recently, I co-authored Re-Engage (with Mark Hirschfield) which revealed the six universal drivers of employee engagement based on our analysis of 2.1 million employee surveys collected in Best-Place-to-Work competitions in 45 U.S. cities.

The 7 Hidden Reasons Employees Leave

The 7 Hidden Reasons Employees Leave (AMACOM, 2005/second edition, 2012), reported the results of my analysis of 20,000 third-party, post-exit surveys conducted by The Saratoga Institute. In what way are the 7 reasons “hidden”? If the vast majority of managers believe that pay is the main reason employees quit (which they do) while only 12% of surveyed employees said pay was the main reason they left, then the real reasons remain hidden.

Keeping the People Who Keep You in Business

I named my consulting firm after the title of my first book—Keeping the People Who Keep You in Business (AMACOM Books, 2000), a compilation of innovative, practical, and time-tested employee retention strategies and practices that companies were using at the time to fight and win “The War for Talent.”
